BOOK A TOUR!
In addition to a walking tour of Deptford on Tuesday, July 9, this year’s conference also includes a choice of tours before our evening workshop at The Globe on the Thursday of the conference. No other events are scheduled for the Thursday afternoon. Conference tours are:
(1) Marlowe & Deptford (Tuesday, July 9 • 10 to 11:30 a.m.) — Led by Matt Haynes, this 90-minute tour is a walk of just over two miles from Deptford Bridge to the Thames and St Nicholas’s church where Marlowe is buried. The walk will start at Deptford Bridge station on the DLR (south exit) and end at the top of the High Street, which is around 10 minutes’ walk from Goldsmiths.
(2) A Marlovian(ish) Walking Tour of Bankside & City (Thursday, July 11 • 2 to 3:30 p.m.) — Led by Tracey Hill, this 90-minute tour begins at the site of the Rose Playhouse, ventures north of the Thames, and ends up on the Bankside. Learn more about the Rose, Bel Savage and their connections to Marlowe, as well as the vibrant neighborhoods in which the plays of Marlowe, Shakespeare, and other writers were staged.
(3) The Rose Playhouse (Thursday, July 11 • 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.) — This 45-minute tour explores the site of the Rose Playhouse. Built by Philip Henslowe in 1587, the Rose was the first theatre in Bankside built for the express purpose of staging plays. It was excavated in the 1980s during construction of an office block, and its foundations are now preserved. Learn more about the history of the playhouse, the role it played in London’s early theatre scene, and the work being done to keep its legacy alive.
SPACE IS LIMITED TO 20 PEOPLE FOR EACH TOUR. PLEASE USE THE FORM BELOW TO BOOK A SPOT.
